Dear Geno,

This newsletter is a gift from the Chico Corsa Cycling Club. Our hope is that we inspire you to help Chico become a better cycling town than it already is. If you love cycling and would like to improve your speed and endurance or you want to race or simply see racing back in Chico, join us at one of our monthly club meetings and meet others with similar interests.

A Word from the President

Share Your Dreams
Geno Gruber

There was a man who once said "A dream you dream alone is only a dream. A dream you dream together is reality." They called him a Beatle but he was a giant. In fact, I think that guy will be remembered more for his dreams than the timeless hits he wrote. Hmmm... I also recall a small bald guy with glasses who professed that "you must be the change you want to see in the world." He also will be remembered for ages to come.

The sweet spot

Spring is getting near so it's time to move your training level(s) up a notch. If you've been focusing on base training through the winter you should be getting ready to increase the intensity. So where do you go from here and what Level should you be training at? Well, the answer is Sweet Spot Training (SST). In a couple of the past Weekly Workouts I recommended doing a few intervals at this level. As we approach the time to start training your Threshold, Sweet Spot training helps prepare your body to handle the stress of Threshold and Anaerobic Capacity work.

Rising stars:
Anthony Ferretti and Margaret Jones both put in gutsy performances at the Davis Junior Criterium. Their races followed the start of the first stage of the Amgen Tour of California and for those watching the race on television, yes, it really was that soggy...

Anyway, Margaret rode aggressively winning a $20 prime and earning another $60 and some cool schwag for her second place finish. Anthony took a $50 prime against stiff competition and rode himself inside out while doing the lion's share of the heavy lifting in a chase group. Kudos to both for persevering in very tough conditions. We will be eagerly anticipating more of the same as the racing season progresses...

Even when they are bad, they're still pretty good (injury and damage to bikes excepted). There was a fair contingent of Corsa's finest at the 09 Cherry Pie. I'll give a brief run-down on results:

Transition to Spring Riding and Racing

Now that you know what Sweet Spot Training (SST) is all about (hopefully you read that article) I wanted to offer some suggestions on how to solidify your Endurance base/fitness that you built during the winter months. Follow these suggestions and you'll be ready for the coming season.

"Mr. In-Between"

By Mark Bloom

Corsa's been reaching out to the wider cycling community in Chico-they're not just for racers anymore-so I thought I'd take a stab a writing a couple of pieces on riding from my perspective, which is a little unique: judging by TT results and the sort of rides I enjoy, I seem to fall in between the racing community and the recreational group in town. So I'll take a shot at getting my thoughts across clearly, and hopefully you'll find some of my writing useful, or thought-provoking, or even funny (hey, I might get lucky!)

Humor - Blackberry Surprise

By David Albrecht

I like the transition from spring into summer. I love when the days become long and the weather gets hot. When I was competing that transition also meant my long training rides went from three or four hours to six hours or more. But for some reason I was always a little slow to remember that those additional miles required additional calories...

Cross Country Tour Part One

by Janine Rood

Hi All... After reading Dave's request for a variety of articles to put in the Corsa Newsletter I did some brainstorming on what I might be able to add. I saw Gino mentioning articles on touring, etc and a thought came to me... Why not post Janine's journal/emails from her ride across the United States in 1996?

So after asking her if she minded, which she didn't, I dug around on my hard drive and found it. This journal was actually sent out as weekly emails from the road (this was before blogging or internet cafes!). I saved and copied them into a Word doc and then printed it out and gave it to her when she had finished the trip (we had just met a month or so before she left and started dating when she came back).

We want you race results, ride reports, cycling stories, photos, articles and input. Got something to sell? Trying to arrange a carpool to rides or races? Let us know... e-mail your newsletter submissions to David Albrecht with the following subject line: "ATTN: newsletter" by the 20th of the month for inclusion in the next newsletter.

Sincerely, Chico Corsa Cycling Club
