Dear Geno,
As road season comes to an end, cyclocross is just
getting started so don't hang up the padded shorts
yet. Chico Corsa will be starting the very popular LSD
rides (Long Steady Distance) Be pre-paired to ride
with 30 other cycling nuts this winter on Sundays.
This newsletter is a gift from the Chico Corsa Cycling
Club. Our hope is that we inspire you to help Chico
become a better cycling town then it already is. If you
love cycling and would like to improve your
speed or endurance or you want to race or
just see racing back in Chico, join us at one of our
monthly club meetings and meet others with
interests like yours.

Indoor Commitment
For me, this last cycling season was the most fun of
any of the last 25 years. I logged more miles, I raced
more, I learned more about fitness and more about
racing. My wife has fallen in love with the sport and my
5 years old claimed 5 podiums in 5 races, including 1
win.
How can I make next year better?

Check out this cake topping
Chico Corsa board member Eric Hoiland and his new
bride Katie wed in Truckee on Saturday, October
13th. Eric's Brother and local artist Sten Hoiland
made the cake topping. Is it cool or what?
Congratulations! We will see you on the road.

Welcome to Cyclocross Season!
|
|
By Lau Ackerman
Hello all,
Well the road season is over, the crits have faded
away, and most of the mountain bike race locations
are beginning to see some rain and snow. So what to
do now? Hey, I know! Lets do some cross racing!
For those of you who don't know what cross racing is
or you are afraid to ask one of "those darn cross
guys", I am here to help. Cyclocross is a fun sport that
most anyone can have a good time with. Picture
steeple chase on bikes. It all started years and years
ago in Europe as a way for roadies to keep some
condition in the winter months. You can sign up on
race day, ride most any bike, and have a good time
with a bunch of like minded folk. The crowds tend to
be easy going and there to have fun and race hard. It
is also viewer friendly as the courses snake back and
forth in a relatively small area so a little walking yields
a lot of good viewing.

Up Grades
Chico made some noise at the World Senior Games.
Jeff Smith, the youngest 60 years old I have ever met,
popped over to St. George Utah to compete in the
World Senior Games cycling events.
I had asked him to keep me updated for this
newsletter, so on a daily basis he would send me a
picture of himself standing on a podium. Here is
a link to a
Chico ER article on him. Here are some
pictures. Pic 1 Pic

Great Job Jeff and thanks for sharing.
The Chico Corsa 2008 CAT 3 Team After
placing 2nd overall in the NCNCA CAT 4 "Best All
around Team" competition, nearly the entire CAT 4
team has upgraded for the next season. This will
defiantly make our CAT 3 team a threat. We will have
- Jeff Galland
- Mike Cordova
- Mike Ricks
- C.J. Humphries
- James Plummer
grabbing points in next years BAT competition for
CAT 3. All of these guys are strong and Jeff Galland is
arguably the best Crit rider in Chico. What is most
exciting about Jeff is that he wants to help the others.
Keep an eye on these guys in '08, it is going to be fun
to watch.

By Rodney Cox
Charlie Geshekter and Michelle Beltran put on another
fantastic event at the 4th Annual Jack & Jill Time Trial
held yesterday - Sunday, October 7th! There were 27
teams that took part in this team time trial event, in
great conditions.....except for a little bit of wind. Lots of
cash and prizes were given out at the Awards
Ceremony held yesterday at Peet's Coffee at 1:00pm,
and I'm sure many teams rode away very happy with
their performance out there yesterday! And I want to
thank all of you for coming out to do this event - without
you guys, these events just wouldn't happen - we
thank you tremendously for your participation! And a
huge thank you goes out to Charlie Geshekter,
Michelle Beltran, Preben Nielsen and Chris
Mahannah for putting this event on - you guys ROCK!!!!
Pics by Tony Rocha can be found here
Anyway, here are the results from yesterday's Jack &
Jill Time Trial:
1. Kerry Kelly & Paul McIntyre 23:52
2. Linda Zorn & Jimmy Walker 25:22
3. Lisa Martens & Geno Gruber 25:41
4. Chris Aarcher & Jeff Galland 26:06

Low Back Pain and Cycling
|
|
By James Plummer
Some months ago, I approached the issue of what
a 'pain in the neck' cycling could be. While accurate,
the spine has other problematic areas as well; the low
back (or lumbar spine) is another vulnerable area.
While the neck is built for mobility, the lumbar spine is
built of stability. In providing this stability, there are
structures that are unique to the area and can invite
injury while cycling. Briefly looking at the anatomy,
biomechanics of the lumbar and common injuries will
provide us insight into how we can head-off these very
debilitating cycling injuries.

Who is that gal in the "Giddy Up" Jersey?
|
|
The Fastest Female Jr.
Whenever a new face shows up at the Fast 50 and
hangs in until the end, we are always asking each
other "Who was the guy on the..." Well you can only
imagine the questions when the new face happens to
be a gal. There are only a handful of females that are
in the final sprint action so they tend to me more
noticeable then just another fast guy.
