Dear Geno,
logo

Welcome to the February issue of Chico Cycling.

If you love cycling and would like to improve your speed or endurance or you want to race or just see racing back in Chico, attend one of our monthly club meetings and meet others with interests like yours. Chico Corsa wants to bring cyclists together.

Chico Corsa members have an advantage...Click here to see.

I have allowed the cold weather and some poor excuses to keep me out of the saddle. My training plan is shot to pieces and my performance during the Sunday club rides has proved it. My last two rides were 70 and 82 miles. I bonked on both. I think there is something in the air in Hamilton City that causes it.

Fit or not, I thought it would be fun to race. So yesterday I headed down to Sacramento for my first event of the season, the UC Davis Cal Aggie Criterium at William Land Park. It was a blast. It was interesting how well I did. Check this out...last March I raced My first race of the year on the same course, the Land Park crit. I raced the 35+ 4/5 race and got dropped. This year, starting my season 2 months sooner, I raced the 35+ Open (the race had everyone from Pro Safeway guys to first timers) After some hard turns at the front, I finished just off the back of the pack. Then 10 minuets after the finish, the Elite 3/4 race started where I finished in the middle of the pack.

I learned some important lessons this month
1) Attitude is as important as fitness and
2) If you are going to have a training plan, keep it in front of you so you don't make a commitment that will interfere with it. The worst promise you break is the one you make to yourself.

We still have a long season ahead of us. If you are like me and have not been true to your training plan, it is not to late. Start now. Most importantly get mentally fit. Remember, "If you believe you can, you can. If you believe you can't, your right."

I love this sport. Ride safe, we'll see you at Paskenta.

Jeff Galland
Chico Corsa places well at the Cal Aggie Criterium bike race in Sacramento. C.J. Humphries placed 2nd in the Cat 4/5 race while Mike Cordova snagged 4th. Mike Cordova also placed 3rd in the Cat 3/4 race just an hour earlier. Jeff Galland raced 3 races, back to back to back, the 35+ Open, Cat 3/4 and then the Cat 1/2/3. His best placing was 6th in the Cat 3/4 race.

We also had James Plumber finish with the pack after and impressive solo break with 5 laps to go. He lasted 2 laps before the peleton swallowed him back up. Jim Clark, Mike Ricks, Andy Mastorakis and Geno Gruber all raced the Masters 35+ Open race and then immidately raced the Elite 3/4 race. Paul Begbie Raced well in the masters 35+ Open and the Cat 4/5 races.

Here is Mike Cordova's Race report:
"The 10am 4/5 race sold out before we got there so some of us got into the B race at 2pm. James did manage to get into the race though. Start of the race he spent most of the time in the pack conserving energy then with 5 laps to go he took a flyer and opened up a gap. Got caught though with 3 laps to go but was a very strong effort.
2nd race was the 35+ race and we had Andy, Jeff, Geno, Paul, Jim and Mike R in the race. I missed most of it because I was warming up but we finished strong in the pack.
In the 3/4 race we had Jeff, Andy, Myself, Geno, Jim, CJ and Mike R. I stayed in the pack for most of the race then with 7 laps to go I moved up towards the front on the straightaway and got onto a newly formed 4 man breakaway. I noticed we had about a 10 second gap so I barked orders to the guys that we should do short pulls and that we could make it. So we started working and the group dropped to 3. I was taking some hard pulls along with a Pillar Systems rider, he took off after one of my pulls on the last lap and I was stuck with a Alto Velo rider who had been sucking on our wheels. So I took 3rd and Jeff took 6th.
The 4/5 race CJ and I got into a large break of 7 riders with 8 laps to go. The Pillar Team drove the pace way early and they eventually fell of save for their top rider. Coming out of the last corning there was a hard crash and a few people went down right in front of CJ and I. We had to swerve and I had to brake to avoid it. In the final sprint CJ took 2nd and I took fourth."

Way to go Chico Corsa!
We have posted a very complete event calendar on our web site for your convenience. It is heavy with races but also have some of the popular century rides. When ever possible I linked the date to the event's web site.

If there are events that you know of that you think are worthy of the calendar, please email me the info and I will update the calendar. Your participation will only make it better.

The first time I did the Paskenta Century I thought it would be like any other unsupported century. What I did not know is that this has become a favorite for racers from all over the North State and Nevada. This is more then a century, it is a full blown unofficial road race!

Riding race pace is one option but not the only option. There are a few routs to choose from and riders will be on all of them. So for a great time before your Super Bowl party Come join us. The Race team will be attempting to hang on for dear life and Dave Withrow will be riding with the smarter people who just want to log a few miles.

Paskenta Century Sunday, February 4th Super Bowl Sunday - Chico - Corning - Paskenta - Orland 50, 75 or 100 flat miles, starts 8am at One Mile, Bidwell Park, Chico, CA. No fees, map provided, show up & ride century.

At the February 2nd meeting, Pillsbury Physical Therapy will be presenting a discussion on sports injuries related to cycling. The presenting therapists have extensive backgrounds in orthopedic and sports related physical therapy. Their talk will include reasons for some common injuries (think: low back pain) and tips & exercises for prevention.

Please bring your questions and experiences and be prepared for an insightful look at how you can keep cycling longer, more powerfully and with less pain.
You can now open your bank accounts at Tri Counties Bank, and be able to order your very own limited edition Check Card (ATM and Debit Card) featuring a Chico Corsa kit outfitted rider. Be the first in your block to have one!
Tandem Rally does not mean that mono's are excluded. Everyone is welcome. Join us for a beautiful ride around the amazing Sutter Buttes.
