Dear Geno,
logo

Welcome to the December issue of Chico Cycling.

If you love cycling and would like to improve your speed or endurance or you want to race or just see racing back in Chico, attend one of our monthly club meetings and meet others with interests like yours. Chico Corsa wants to bring cyclists together.

Chico Corsa members have an advantage...Click here to see.

Okay, it is 8:15 PM on a Thursday night. I am sitting in an awkward position on my trainer as I type this. The weather, family and work have not allowed me much time to ride.

The 2007 road race calendar is out. What races will I do, I am yet not sure. What I am sure is that if I don't get some saddle time, it wont much matter. So, started this week, is :30 minuets of stationary bike at home no matter what time of the day. I do it before I go to bed.

So why am I telling you this? I want you to get out there and ride every chance you get. Like Larry Nolan said at our meeting, "If you want to get better; you have to ride when you can."

I love this sport. Ride safe, we'll see you out there.

Larry Nolan
We had a great turn out at our last meeting. Over 40 people packed the room at Mt. Mikes to meet Larry Nolan. He was surprised by the turnout and is inspired to come back. He also wants us to keep him informed about the Fast 50.

On the morning of the meeting, seven of us braved the dark and freezing weather to do a 6:00 am ride with Larry. We did the Keefer loop. It was awesome.

I feel I can't thank Larry enough. His passion for this sport and his desire to see other succeed is inspiring to me.

Larry, on behalf of all of us Chico Cyclist I want to thank you not only for your visit to our club but for what you are doing for the sport. You are a great special guy.
The Chico Velo Christmas Party was more of a comedy show then anything else. Plenty from our club were there to join in the laughs.

For those of you that are more interested in doing centurys with your friends the riding with the racers, Dave Withrow is looking for some help to get a group together to do just that. Represent Chico in the Century rides.

Dave started riding last year and Paskenta was his first ever century. He also did the Rice Valley Century, the Wildflower and Sierra century. I lost count after that. The thing that he will be most remembered for is his first ride ever up Cohasset. He chose cold snowy Time Trial.

If you want to be a part of his group or better yet help him get it going let me know and I will pass it along.
Sunday, December 31st, 2006
Registration starts at 8:30am
First rider off at 9:01am
1 minute intervals between riders.

Free event. No prizes.....BUT, you will have a great sense of satisfaction! Finish line will be past where it says "Finish Line" on the road at the top - look for the timekeepers! Start line will be just past Stilson Canyon Road - to avoid traffic coming in to and out of Stilson Canyon Road.

4 miles, 800 feet of climbing......or whatever your computer/GPS/altimeter tells you it is. Be sure to remember your time for comparison sakes - we'll be having another one of these in Spring 2007!
We have out grown the room at the Mangroove Mt. Mikes so we are relocating to the Mountain Mike's Pizza at 1105 West 5th Street. That is the corner of 32 and 5th.

At the January 5th meeting, Pillsbury Physical Therapy will be presenting a discussion on sports injuries related to cycling. The presenting therapists have extensive backgrounds in orthopedic and sports related physical therapy. Their talk will include reasons for some common injuries (think: low back pain) and tips & exercises for prevention.

Please bring your questions and experiences and be prepared for an insightful look at how you can keep cycling longer, more powerfully and with less pain.

If you want to invite others to your weekly group ride, let me know and I will include it in this news letter and post it on the Chico Corsa Calendar. Just use the terrain and ability scale that Chico Velo uses when describing your ride.

Sincerely,

Geno Gruber
