Dear Geno,
logo

We are doing our best to keep you up to date on all of the Chico cycling news. So what do we have for you this month? Hopefully a more compleat newsletter then last month. (I'll try not to forget major chico events like the Forest Ranch TT)

October marks the end of the cycling season for the roadies but the cyclo cross season is just getting started. We have also had a local mountain bike race. I need your help keeping up with all of these events so don't hesitate to "e" me about an event you have not heard me mention. I will do my best to get it in this newsletter.

Chico Corsa members have an advantage...Click here to see.

This is a great day. As I write this I am recovering from the Forest Ranch Time Trial. It is 4:20, six hours after the event. I had the rare opportunity to take a :45 minuet afternoon snooze, a healthy recovery meal, and I am still hurting. I love it. Does that make me a sadomasochist or is it that us cyclist realize the pain is the reward for a good workout? My time was just seconds faster then last year but that is okay. It was the ride, the people, and the pain that made this a great day.

The Forest Ranch Hill Climb was a great success. the weather could not have been better. A special thanks to Chico Velo and more specifically, Ed McLaughlin, Rodney Cox and Eric Hoiland for there time in putting on this event.

HUGE thanks to Lau and Ben for helping out with the Family Bike Ride. We all had a fantastic time for a great cause and even received some nice "PR in the ER," so to speak. It's a shame that Lau didn't get his photo in the story because he truly was the kids' favorite, due - no doubt - to the many miles he put in on the dual recumbent cycle with just about every kid there. In fact, he took so many spins on the recumbent that I began to worry about his cyclocross race the following day. Lau also brought his wife and kids who got in on the cycling action as well.

Thanks, again, to Ben and Lau. I'm looking forward to next year with the Kids Club and any other community events that we can get involved in.

Thanks Even for your report. You guys obviously represented the club well.
While roaming about the Taste of Chico my wife, I spotted this painting. For obvious reasons I was partial to it and I voted for it. Then...yesterday... I learn that it was painted by Chico Corsa member Roy Steves. So, I asked him about it.

How long have you been painting?:
I have been painting for about 10 years or so, and while most of the work I do is in a mural format, (ie. on a wall) I have reduced the scale every so often and produced a few canvasses.

What inspired this painting?:
I was suffering from a bit of painters block when the COBA contest came around this year. I do a lot of landscapes, and started with a view of some local foothills in the distance. Then the storm cloud, and I really didn't like any of it. The bike was something I had been wanting to paint for some time, and I just threw it on. Its mostly my orange racing bike mixed with the single speed drive train and chopped handlebars on an old Peugeot I have. At first the image seemed absurd, then I started enjoying it. It messed up the scale in the foreground, so a bit of adjusting was needed.

It will be auctioned off. What do you think it will go for?:
The painting will be auctioned off at 7:00 tonight. I guess I am hoping for something like $400 - 800 (half goes to COBA). Pricing your own art is always tough and I have never really been comfortable doing it. The painting took me some time and I put value in that.

Thanks Roy...for the brief interview and most of all, the painting. I enjoy them both.

Post Script: Roy's painting not only sold for $500 but it won first prize in the art contest. The exciting thing for us cyclist is that will become a mural in downtown Chico.
Tri Counties Bank Management Rings NASDAQ Bell in NYC
Tri Counties Bank, a subsidiary of Trico Banchares (NASDAQ: TCBK), was one of the first California companies headquartered north of Sacramento to preside over The NASDAQ Stock Market Opening Bell last Thursday, September 21, 2006. Rick Smith, Tri Counties Bank president/CEO along with three members of Tri Counties Bank’s executive management team, board members and family members flew to New York City to be part of the ceremonious event. Tri Counties Bank has been publicly traded on NASDAQ since 1993. When asked about ringing the bell Smith said, “It’s an honor and a proud moment for a company that started with $1 million in capital.”
Please join the fun and be at Mountain Mikes Pizza on Mangrove on Friday the 6th of October at 6:00pm. We get together talk cycling and club stuff. All are welcome.

If you want to invite others to a your weekly group ride, let me know and I will post it for you. Just use the terrain and ability scale the Chico Velo uses when discribing your ride.

Sincerely,

Geno Gruber
